When choosing to put carpet in your home or business, you will want to compare different types before you make a decision on what type you will buy. There are several different types of carpet. Wool, nylon, polypropylene Olefin, acrylic modacrylic, and polyester are some of the choices that you will be able to choose from. Wool carpet and nylon carpet are two common types that are considered for flooring. Here is a comparison between the two based on their qualities:
- Resiliency-the fiber structure will decide its resiliency and modifications. Wool has good to excellent resiliency, depending on the quality. Nylon has excellent resiliency.
- Abrasion resistance-this is decided by the density and how tight the carpet yarn is packed. Wool has to excellent abrasion resistance. Nylon has excellent abrasion resistance.
- Soil and stain resistance-the color, dyes, fiber structure, and modifications decide how soil and stain resistance a carpet is. Wool has good to excellent soil and stain resistance. Nylon is good to excellent.
- Sunlight resistant-this is decided by carpet fiber structure and modifications. Wool needs UV protection or the sun will degrade it rapidly. Nylon has good sun resistance.
- Static-fiber structure and modification will decide carpet static. Without modification to the carpet, both wool and nylon will have a build up of static when the humidity is low.
- Mildew resistance-the carpet fiber structure and modification will decide if the carpet is mildew resistant. Both wool carpets and nylon carpets need to be kept dry to avoid mildew.
- Texture-this is decided by how the carpet feels to touch. Wool carpet is soft and warm to the touch. Nylon carpet will vary between warm and soft to cold and course, depending on the quality of the nylon carpet.
- Flammability-this is decided by the carpet fiber structure, modification, construction, dyes, padding, and installation. Wool carpet is naturally flame resistant without added chemicals. It is slow burning, considered self-extinguishing, and will smell like burning hair when it does burn. Nylon carpet may be treated with flame resistant chemicals. It is slow burning, melts with direct flame, self-extinguishing, varies with structure, and smells like celery when it does burn (melt).
